New Owners?
Second Life Has New Owners? Like many of you I was thrown for a loop when I found out that Second Life was purchased by investment Company. Many people went on the gloom and doom path saying that Second Life would be closed. But from what I read online that it could be the furthest thing from the truth.
New Owners Does Not Spell the End of the World.. Our Virtual World!
The investment group led by Randy and Brad are known for building up companies not raiding them for financial assets. I think too many of us have seen the movie Wall Street. Not to say that venture capital companies do not do that practice, I don’t believe it is their intention to do so.
Doing a little background investigation on the two new owners shows you that these are actually bright men. Randy Waterfield is a member of many corporate boards. He was educated at Harvard University and is very bright being a member of Mensa. The Waterfield group owns stake in many companies.
Background on the New Owners
Bradford Oberwager is also exceptionally talented as well. This University of Pennsylvania MBA graduate and graduate of Georgetown University has been a part of many tech startups. He currently serves as CEO for Jyve Corporation which connects brands and retailers with certified talent. He also sits as chairman of the Sundia Corporation which makes protein bars.
In Conclusion
Second Life has been ablaze with rumors after this purchase. However, Brett Linden senior director of marketing for Linden labs made a comment on the forums that I will put here below. By the looks of this comment while the details of the deal were confidential the end of Second Life is furthest from what is happening right now. We as a blog and podcast will keep an eye on the situation and let you know as things develop. Linden Lab’s Response to Rumormill
Good day, all!
Just jumping in to respond to a few of the comments…
A few folks are speculating that this is the end of SL and nothing could be further than the truth. Any talk of dismantling or radically changing the fundamentals of SL that we know and love is inaccurate. While we can’t get into specific details about the deal itself, I want to emphasize the fact that this keeps Linden Lab as an independent venture led by two investors who have a great deal of awareness about what SL is and isn’t. They are excited to join and help us grow both SL and Tilia while also respecting and recognizing the needs and sensitivities of the existing culture and community.
